Here they are!  Just in time for summer sunshine, these cute reversible hats will protect your face while you play outdoors.  Choose from two styles, beanie or bucket hat, each of which is easy to complete in an afternoon or evening.  The pattern includes three sizes:  baby (3 - 9 months), toddler, and adult, with instructions for adjusting the pattern according to actual head measurement.  Fabric requirements are minimal, so this is a great project for those mountains (drawers, boxes, bins, etc.) of scrap fabrics we seem to unwittingly collect.  Mix and match fabrics for an eclectic look, or choose two coordinating fabrics and add some rick rack or lace.  Constructed from cotton fabrics, these hats are machine washable and pack easily into a suitcase or backpack.

This toddler sized hat makes a wonderful gift for a special little boy.

Here is one for the Little Princess in your life.  Add ball fringe, rick rack, lace, buttons...your imagination is the limit!

This hat sports a wool felt rosette.  The perfect touch!
This hat is made from a 1940's retro print and is embellished with rick-rack trim around the brim.  Don't you think it is cheerful looking?  The reverse side is the sweet yellow floral print hat at the top of this blog post.  Equally cheerful and fun!

It has been quite awhile since I have posted a project on Simple Gifts From Your Heart.  I have been busy with creating and sewing a table mat called "The Christmas Story."  While it is a larger project, I have to say that it is still simple.  The applique and embroidery are pretty basic - the project itself is just bigger and it takes longer to complete.  Don't be intimidated!  Jump in and try your hand at a beautiful project that will last years and grace your table each holiday season.

The finished table mat measures approximately 25 inches by 42 inches and is made from wool and wool felts.  The colors are rich and beautiful.

This is a close up of the manger.  The applique is done with a simple whip stitch.  The embroidery stitches are mostly back stitch, outline stitch, lazy daisy stitch, and French knots.  Nothing too complicated!
Here is one of the inns.  Notice the "No Vacancy" sign.
A lowly camel awaits outside an inn with his burdens nearby.
This cute little B & B is made from a gorgeous red wool.  No need to turn under the edges as wool doesn't ravel.  All of the buildings feature candles in the windows.
The three kings come to worship the Savior, bearing gifts.

This was really a fun project.  The colors are beautiful and the embroidery is simple but effective.  The materials needed to complete the table mat are readily available at yardage stores.  Be sure to purchase wool felts, not acrylic. The wool felts are heavier and are available in many beautiful colors.  Wools can be found as solids, plaids, and other weaves.  Have fun choosing your fabrics!

Well, the end of the month is just around the corner (tomorrow!!) and thoughts of February lead one to visions of lacy hearts, chocolates, and chubby cupids poised coyly with bow and arrow in hand.  I not only think of my sweetheart, but also of my close girlfriends and family members.  A sweet handmade gift is a nice surprise for a roommate, daughter, mom, sister, best friend, or prayer partner.  Add a rosette to a headband, pin one to a jacket lapel, or tie one to a gift bag or wrapped gift for a finishing touch.  For a more extensive project, make several rosettes and sew them together into a garland for a window or a swag to adorn the back of a dining chair.

The beginning...
Sewing the outer petal to the base...
The finished product...easy and fun!

Such a simple delight...cozy boot toppers that work up amazingly fast!  Start with the sleeves from an "old" sweater - how old is up to you - thrift store find or one of those sweaters that just seems to live at the bottom of your drawer. Add a few basic embroidery stitches, a bit of applique and a little lace and you have a one-of-a kind gift or an accessory for your own wardrobe that will draw raves. This would be a fun group project - gather a few girlfriends and mix and match sweaters and fabric scraps.  Try a crochet edging at the top, or add some rick rack or ribbon trim.  Use your imagination and have fun!

Dress them up or slide them over your jeans and slip on your Uggs.  An extra layer of warmth is really nice on cold days.

Simple felt circle appliques make cute flowers.  Add a French knot for the center and some tiny leaves on either side.

Delicate lace and a bit of embroidery adds a feminine touch to your recycled sweater!

A pattern for these boot toppers is coming soon!  I am experimenting with a few variations and hope to have the pattern ready by my post next week.

It seems that each year after I put away the Christmas decorations and give the house a good cleaning I am in the mood to move things around and do a little mini-redecorating.  I also feel like "streamlining" - getting rid of clutter and keeping out only those things that are functional as well as pretty.  These coaster are just that:  functional and pretty.  Make a set for yourself, or whip up a couple of sets to have on hand to give as gifts in the coming weeks.

Choose two coordinating colors of wool felt for your coaster set and embellish them ...
...with felt scraps and embroidery.

French Knots make a dainty border.
